Yoga is a practical science experienced through regular practice, integrating body, breath, mind, and consciousness to promote inner awareness rather than merely intellectual understanding.
Yoga includes ethical values, physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, deep relaxation, and self-awareness, creating a balanced lifestyle for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
The ultimate purpose of Yoga is inner peace and self-realisation. Its regular practice enhances physical health, emotional stability, mental clarity, and spiritual growth for people of all ages.
Yoga offers a complete spectrum of practicesβfrom energising physical techniques to deeply meditative experiences. Together they cultivate strength, awareness, relaxation, and holistic wellbeing.
Physical postures that improve strength, flexibility, balance, and overall physical wellbeing.
Conscious regulation of breath to enhance vitality, concentration, emotional stability, and inner calm.
Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation) cultivate sustained attention, deep mindfulness, and profound mental clarity.
A guided practice of Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) that promotes deep physical, mental, and emotional relaxation while maintaining awareness.
Yoga Nidra, often called "Yogic Sleep" , is an ancient meditative practice rooted in the Tantric tradition. It was systematically presented by Swami Satyananda Saraswati of the Bihar School of Yoga, making it one of the most authentic and scientifically structured relaxation practices.
Yoga Nidra traces its roots to the Nyasa practices of Tantra and the Mandukya Upanishad's description of the four states of consciousness. Swami Satyananda Saraswati later systematised it into a structured scientific practice at the Bihar School of Yoga.
Yoga Nidra is a state of conscious relaxation where the body rests deeply while awareness remains awake. Through body rotation, breath awareness, visualisation and Sankalpa, practitioners experience profound physical, mental, emotional and spiritual relaxation.
Yoga Nidra as taught by the Bihar School of Yoga preserves the authentic traditional method. Modern neuroscience also recognises its role in deep relaxation, emotional regulation, creativity, stress reduction and subconscious transformation.
"Yoga Nidra is the art of conscious relaxation where healing begins from within. A few minutes of Yoga Nidra may provide the restorative effects of several hours of restful sleep."
Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting deep physical and mental restoration.
A positive resolve planted in the subconscious to encourage lasting personal transformation.
Yoga Nidra is regarded as a practical method of Pratyaharaβthe fifth limb of Ashtanga Yoga.
Encourages deep relaxation associated with enhanced creativity, learning and emotional healing.
The ancient text Yoga Vasistha reveals how psychological stress transforms into physical illness. It provides a profound understanding of holistic health long before modern psychosomatic medicine.
Adhi refers to disorders originating in the mind. Uncontrolled desires, emotional turbulence, anxiety, and ignorance ( Ajnana ) disrupt the smooth flow of Prana (vital energy) in the subtle body.
Chronic mental stress, unchecked desires, emotional instability, and agitated thought patterns.
Vyadhi represents physical ailment. When the flow of Prana is disturbed by Adhi, it impairs digestion ( Agni ) and metabolism, eventually manifesting as physical diseases in the body.
Digestive imbalances, psychosomatic disorders, physiological fatigue, and bodily pain.
According to Sage Vasistha, physical health is restored when mental equilibrium is regained through conscious practice and self-realization.
Unfulfilled desires and continuous mental agitation generate persistent inner stress ( Adhi ).
Agitated thoughts disrupt the natural flow of life energy ( Prana ) throughout the channels ( Nadis ).
Erratic Prana affects digestive fire ( Agni ), resulting in poor digestion and toxification.
Toxins accumulate and manifest as physical diseases and organic ailments ( Vyadhi ).
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras describe the eightfold path (Ashtanga) as the complete system for attaining liberation. Each limb builds upon the previous, culminating in Samadhi.
Ethical Restraints
Non-violence (Ahimsa), Truthfulness, Non-stealing, Celibacy, Non-possessiveness. The moral foundation of Yoga practice.
Personal Observances
Purity, Contentment, Discipline, Self-study, Surrender to the Divine. Internal discipline for inner growth.
Physical Postures
Stable, comfortable postures that prepare the body for meditation. Promotes strength, flexibility, and body awareness.
Breath Control
Regulation of life-force (Prana) through breath. Energises, calms and prepares the mind for deeper inward practices.
Withdrawal of Senses
The inward withdrawal of the senses. Yoga Nidra is a profound practice of Pratyahara β the gateway between outer and inner limbs. Through conscious relaxation, awareness is drawn deep inward.
Concentration
Single-pointed focus on an object, mantra, or visualisation. Trains the mind to remain steady and undistracted.
Meditation
Uninterrupted flow of awareness towards the object of focus. Deep meditation that transcends thought and brings inner peace.
Union & Liberation
The highest state β complete absorption of the individual self into pure consciousness. The ultimate goal of Ashtang Yoga.

Feeling blessed to get an opportunity to spend valuable moments with the young, energetic Gorkha athletes after previous YogaNidra sessions, coming all the way from small hilly regions close to Darjeeling. A must pause !!
"How beautifully the great Osho revealed the 'pause' as the sacred, divine space between thoughts, actions, and life's processes. Entire emphasise to focus not on his words but the gap in between !!! Sincere efforts of the stubborn fickle mind to grasp that fraction moment of pause !!!"
A passing moment of pure presence where awareness arises. These minute gaps, between breaths or switching mood swings, are where the bliss lies, and real meditation begins. Prolonged staying in these pauses helps to realise the inner self and experience sereneness beyond thinking, pessimism, and overthinkingβleading to inner awareness and transformation.
